

The two semesters of 9th grade art history are an introduction for art students to the wonderful history of their craft.

Students will amass a portfolio of artwork that will show a solid understanding of art-making and a full knowledge of working with a variety of art materials and styles.

Projects range from one day studies to multi-week, intensive assignments. A view into the studio life of artists working internationally will allow students to better understand their relationship with the art world.

Students will be introduced to the work of many contemporary, working artists. Students will work independently on projects and will also work together in pairs and small groups, discussing and critiquing art work. A wide variety of materials will be used, including paint, pencil, charcoal, pastel and oil pastel. Many techniques are practiced, including color theory, shading, value, tone, gradation and perspective. Study includes figure drawing, observational drawing, still life study, portraiture, landscape, printmaking, abstraction and graphic design. Ninth grade art study is an intensive class that focuses on skill building as well as a thorough investigation into the creative process. If you are unable to create a video, you may upload a written explanation of up to 500 words (either is equally acceptable). Your video should be no longer than three (3) minutes. Discuss your choice of subject and materials, motivation, and influences. Upload a short video about the three uploaded pieces of original artwork. Select three pieces of artwork from your portfolio (Piece 1 and Piece 2 must be included).

Feel free to use colored pencils if you wish. Consider for the drawing: What bizarre, unusual, or creative toppings does your sandwich have? Who made it? Who is it for? Remember, each school is looking for your potential, and that means how your present skills will grow and develop over the four years you will be spending at their school. It is most important that the schools to which you are applying get the clearest picture possible of your unique artistic abilities and talents.
